As you may know, since May 1st 2014, through our Spreading the Love campaign, Love Child Organics has been donating 1 cent per product purchased, to First Book and First Book Canada. I personally chose to partner with First Book because its cause is close to my heart. In my previous life, before Love Child Organics, I was teacher, and for most of my career I worked in schools with high numbers of children in need. As a teacher, and now as a parent, I am very passionate about books and literacy, so love being able to support the work of this important non-profit through my business.
Today I would like to share with you an example of how our donations directly affects children in need, and how children’s literacy is being directly supported through your purchase of Love Child Organics.
Just recently our donations were directed towards the Children’s Book Bank in Toronto, by providing them with a grant to buy brand new books (for a specific program supporting moms and babies) at an extremely low cost through the First Book Canada Marketplace.
The Children’s Book Bank is a registered charity that supports childhood literacy by providing free books and literacy support to children in low-income neighbourhoods in the Toronto area.
From Canada’s first storefront “book bank” in the Regent Park area of Toronto, The Children’s Book Bank collects and distributes gently used children’s books and distributes them free of charge to children who might not otherwise have a chance to own their own books. In its first five years of operation, The Children’s Book Bank gave away over 400,000 free books!
They are about to start a program of giving new board books to young mothers to read with their children through a local health pilot program initiative in Regent Park. It is a pilot project targeted at parents and babies to introduce parents to the importance of reading to babies and to train and inspire parents to read to their babies and children on a regular basis, starting at Regent Park Community Health Centre. The Centre sees 400 children a year for approximately five visits per child. There are seventeen community health centres in high needs neighbourhoods across Toronto so if the pilot is a success there is significant room to grow.
Our donation is helping to support this new program and we couldn’t feel more privileged or proud to direct our donation towards such a worthy cause.
Please enjoy these images of this special and important space, and of the children enjoying reading their very own new books.
Together with you, our customers, we are impacting lives, even beyond the scope of our organic food products, and we thank you tremendously for your support in this endeavour.
