Superfood Red Valentine’s Smoothies your Little One Will Love

I love serving my kids a special red or pink themed breakfast on Valentine’s Day. Usually we do some variety of whole grain heart-shaped pancakes, with some red berries and maple syrup, and a bright red smoothie on the side.

Here are two of my favourite red smoothie recipes. Both use bright red superfood ingredients like beets, goji berries, strawberries and raspberries for extra nutritional punch.

To make either of these smoothies, simply blend the ingredients together in a powerful, high-speed blender until smooth, then serve.  Tip: Putting the liquids in first, then the more solid ingredients next, usually results in the blender having an easier time breaking down the ingredients.

Almondy Apple Beet Smoothie


1 ½ cups almond milk or water

1 apple, diced (I used Pink Lady variety)

1 small beet, peeled and diced (about ¼ cup)

2 Medjool dates, pitted

1 ½ tablespoons smooth almond butter

1 tablespoon frozen raspberries

A few ice cubes

Pinch of cinnamon (optional)


Berry-Beety Goji Smoothie


1 cup plain, unsweetened Kefir (or whole milk yogurt)

½ cup dairy or non-dairy milk

1 small frozen banana, chopped (if you don’t have a frozen banana, throw in a few ice cubes instead)

1 cup diced strawberries

2 Medjool dates, pitted

1 small beet, peeled and diced (about ¼ cup)

1 tablespoon dried goji berries

1 tablespoon chia seeds

½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
