Reading Celebration

Giving kids who need them brand new books is one of the best feelings ever, and we were lucky enough to have this experience recently at the Reading Celebration we held at an elementary school in Burnaby, BC with one of our partners in giving, First Book Canada.

Did you know that up to 25% of children in Canada don’t even have one book of their very own at home? This is sad but true, so together First Book and Love Child Organics are doing all we can to change this.

To start out the day, the students were treated to an author visit by the wonderful Brandee Bublé, who herself is from the area, and who even worked at the school many years ago. She shared two of her books, O’Shay the Octopus and Jayde the Jaybird, both names after her own children. She was so entertaining and not only read to the children, but through discussing her books, offered them so much wisdom about life in general. And 100 of the children were even given a signed copy of her book to take home for themselves!

After the author readings each class was invited to the library which housed a wonderful surprise. 4000 brand new books, provided through our 1 cent per product Spreading the Love campaign with First Book Canada.  Each child was given the opportunity to choose 5 of these books to take home for their very own! The kids just couldn’t believe it and kept asking if they needed to pay for the books or bring them back. It was so wonderful to be able to say no, they could just keep them! They just couldn’t believe it and it was so heart-warming to witness their excitement as they choose their books.

Sorting through 4000 books was a time-consuming task but we made short work of it with our fabulous Love Child team. I’d like to personally thank them for coming out help and being part of this special day!

Do you know of a school in need that could benefit from new books? If so please head the First Book Canada website to register, and find out how a Reading Celebration like this could become a reality.

With LOVE,

Leah
