Children’s books are such a gift, aren’t they? Not only do they encourage quality time as a family, but they also teach and serve as wonderful conversation starters, which I just love. Reading books about thankfulness with your children is an easy way to encourage and inspire them to show thankfulness in their everyday lives, which may lead to increased optimism and empathy. (And which parent doesn’t want that for his or her children?)
Here are 5 wonderful books about thankfulness:
The Thankful Book by Todd Parr
Todd Parr never disappoints, and as you’d expect, The Thankful Book is absolutely delightful! Filled with his signature simple, vibrantly coloured illustrations, this book encourages children to practice thankfulness every day by recognizing the little things that make their days easier, happier, and sillier – feet because they allow us to run and play, music because it makes us want to dance, and underwear because I like to wear it on my head, to name a few. A fun and easy read with a big message!
Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson
Oh, The Bear Books… So lovable and sweet! In Bear Says Thanks, Bear comes up with the perfect way to say thank you to all of his friends – by hosting a huge feast! Each of his guests arrives with delicious food to share, but there’s one problem – Bear’s cupboards are bare! In a fun twist, his friends come up with something he can share – and it’s nothing they can eat. Such a lovely book of friendship and thankfulness.
Thankful by Eileen Spinelli
Written in charming rhyme, Thankful is about how different people are thankful for different things… The poet is thankful for words that rhyme, the children for morning story time. The artist is thankful for colour and light, and the clown for her costume silly and bright. A lovely book about being thankful for everyday blessings.
The Thank You Book by Mo Willems
Oh, the beloved duo that is Elephant and Piggie! In this final book in the Elephant and Piggie series, the pair go on a mission to thank all of the people who are important to Piggie. As you’d expect, Piggie is more than up for the task while Elephant is worried that they might forget someone. With a bit of a surprise ending, this story is all about expressing thankfulness to those who are important to you.
Give Thanks for Each Day by Steve Metzger
A lovely little book about giving thanks for all of the things in the world that bring us joy. Give thanks for the train that chugs down the track, give thanks for the comfort when Mommy comes back. Give thanks for a puzzle, a favourite bear. The thrill when you’re lifted way up in the air. With rhyming text and pages filled with colourful illustrations and adorable animals, Give Thanks for Each Day is an easy favourite.
Well there they are, 5 truly wonderful books about thankfulness that would make a great addition to any book collection.
